So here’s a couple of stories, and one poem, that I’ve done over the years and liked. See what you think.
“Male Leary Comes Home” is a fictionalization of some post World War II stories from a remarkable man who happens to be my father-in-law (what? you thought I made these characters up.) It’s a cozy-noir story of a young sailor who gives up the sea to come home and protect the woman he loves. It was published in the Anthology of Cozy Noir.
“The Man in the Moon” is my favorite story. Seventeen-year-old Francesca wakes up one night to find her father, who’s been on death row for ten years, sitting on the edge of her bed. He’s escaped from prison just to tell her a fairy tale to try to explain himself to her. It was originally published in Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine in March 2014. This is one of those stories that started out little but then tapped into the very real feelings I have for my very remarkable daughter. We each cry every time we read this. Yes, we do cry easily.
“Pew 13 Seat 7” is a poem about a little girl and God and mathematics. It was originally published in Christian Century on June 1, 2004. And, yes, it is about that same daughter.
